Book DescriptionAnother baby boomer turns 50 every 7.6 seconds. At this rate, by 2030, one quarter of the United States' population will be over 65, and by mid-century the senior citizen population is expected to reach 80 million, outnumbering the population of young people for the first time in history. Aging in America chronicles the unprecedented changes confronting America as more and more people reach an advanced age. Photographer Ed Kashi and writer Julie Winokur first began this project as an award-winning story published by The New York Times Magazine. They went onto documenting in greater detail a broad span of issues, from the upsurge of elderly immigrants following their children to America to the devastating toll a tornado exacted on a rural elderly community. They traveled with the Loners of America, an RV club for mature singles, and delved into a retirement community where Alzheimer's patients work in a child daycare facility. They tracked the campaign of a 76-year-old politician running for office for the first time, documented a woman launching her modeling career in her 60s, and celebrated the wedding of a couple of octogenarians. "The reality of aging will force us to come to terms with the fact that longevity doesn't mean eternal youth," explains Winokur. "America is a society in collective denial of aging. We appreciate vintage in wine, not people..." Changing this perception is the intent of Aging in America. The work that appears in Aging in America has won numerous awards, including the National Press Club Online Journalism Award 2002; Pictures of the Year 2002-Second Place, Best Use of Multi-Media/Interactive Publication; National Media Award from the American Society on Aging 2002; Pictures of the Year 1997-First Place, Magazine Feature Picture Story; World Press 2002-Second Place, Daily Life; Pictures of the Year 1998-Award of Excellence, Magazine Division; and Pictures of the Year 1997-Third Place, Issue Reporting Picture Story. Solo Exhibitions: Fifty Crows Gallery, San Francisco (September 25 - October 30, 2003); San Francisco Arts Commission (September 17 - November 30, 2003) "Exhibiting Signs of Age" Group Exhibition: Berkeley Art Museum (Oct. 8, 2003 - Jan. 18, 2004)
